You know what you completely need in your life? A crochet sock monkey hat, that’s what!
Hear me out here.. because maybe you’re feeling a little surprised right now. Like maybe you had NO IDEA you needed such a hat in your life…
This darling sock monkey hat has all the things I love in a hat. It’s warm. It’s cozy. AND it has a bit of whimsy.
I really love when I can incorporate a bit of fun into my crochet and wearables. You know something that’s not so ‘out there’ as to attract raised eyebrows. But a hint of something that brings a smile to your face and a gleam in your eye.
And this is such a hat.
Ever since I was little I’ve been enamored with sock monkeys.
Take a look and tell me this not adorable? I loved the idea of taking a pair of mens socks and reconstructing it into a cute toy.
Sadly I’ve never actually made a sock monkey. But I totally should.
I love the entire process of taking something and turning it into something delightful. I suppose this is why I love to crochet so much.. this whole yarn and hook to beautiful makes my heart happy.
So when I spied a knitted sock monkey hat a few years ago in A Piece of Ewe, a delightful yarn shop in Bay City, Michigan, I knew I needed to design a crochet sock monkey hat!
Enter this bit of cuteness right here:
I love that it carries all the nostalgic sock monkey vibes, but still looks like a fun, wearable hat. Like it’s “Sock monkey” without being TOO “sock monkey”.. if you know what I mean!
It is also a super fast make because it is worked by holding 2 strands of yarn together throughout. A strand of gray and a strand of cream yarn, held together give that mottled look. Contrasted with the bands of solid cream yarn and bold, red yarn, (also worked with double strands) this hat screams ‘sock monkey’.
I used Berroco Ultra Wool, which is a worsted weight #4, 100% super wash wool. It makes for a warm winter hat and its machine washable, but you’ll want to read the yarn band for exactly how to do that.
Or bypass the wool altogether and go with another worsted weight yarn. This particular yarn is on the thinner side, so be sure to pick a #4 weight yarn that is not overly thick.
The pattern itself is pretty simple, using half double crochet stitches for the body of the hat and single crochet stitches for the brim.
I finished my sock monkey hat off with a nice red pom pom made with a 3-3/8″ Clover pom pom maker. But you could even leave off the pom pom if you want an even more subtle sock monkey vibe.
