Ahh… hand dyed yarn. There’s something about the delectable look and feel of hand dyed yarn that has me running for my hook. And this crochet cap is the perfect make!

If you’re looking for a crochet treat, a lovely hat in hand dyed yarn from a local yarn shop is one of life’s guilty pleasures.

If you’ve never ventured into a local yarn shop you are in for a treat. Unlike big box stores that carry all sorts of crafts with economy in mind, Local Yarn Shops (abbreviated as LYS) are filled with hand selected gorgeous yarn of all kinds.

It is literally the happiest place on earth.. at least for this crocheter over here!

I mean, let’s get real here.. you are surrounded by more yarn than you can imagine in every gorgeous shade you can dream about and every person around you loves the stuff as much as you do!

For some reason, though, local yarn shops tend to attract knitters more than crocheters. The yarn is a bit more expensive and perhaps knitters are more willing to invest in beautiful yarn for a hand knit sweater, for instance, than crocheters.

Today we are going to change all that.

Because, you my friend, have the best pattern ever to “taste” some delicious hand dyed yarn.

Meet the Wish You Were Beer Hat. This hat uses 1 skein of hand dyed worsted weight yarn. So go ahead…. skip along to your favorite LYS and pick out the prettiest skein you can find.

This beautiful bit of goodness happens to be a skein of hand dyed yarn made by Emma’s Yarn in.. you guessed it ‘Wish You Were Beer’ color way and yes.. I loved the name of the color so much, I named my hat after it!

I love the subtle color variations of this beautiful yarn and crocheting with it is an absolute joy. I purchased my yarn at Spun in Ann Arbor, Michigan (which is a destination you must visit if you come to the Great Lakes state). They also have online ordering available if you want to buy easily online.

Or you can head over to Emma’s Yarn and find a stockist in your neck of the woods.

A few things to know about hand dyed yarn. First, don’t be scared off by “wool”. This particular yarn is not the scratchy, itchy stuff of your nightmares. This is soft with incredible drape. It’s also washable (but of, course, follow laundering instructions on the label).

Hand dyed worsted weight yarn is still a #4 yarn, but I find it tends to be on the thinner side compared to the thicker #4 yarn at big box stores. Therefore, this pattern has a few more stitches than my other patterns.

This is important to know because if you want to use a thicker (some would say more ‘normal’),  acrylic worsted weight yarn, you’ll have to adjust the pattern a bit. Instructions to do that are at the bottom of the post.

Whether you’re a crochet beginner or more advanced, you’re going to love the beginner-friendly crochet stitches in this cute crochet beanie! It is a unisex crochet hat and fits an adult size medium to large size head.

This pattern uses the very simple half double crochet stitch. Some rounds are worked traditionally and others are worked in the back loop only or the 3rd loop. My half double crochet photo tutorial covers everything from working the basic stitch to the special BLO and 3rd Loop instructions!

R22-25:  Repeat rows 16-19 (80 st)

The next row begins the ribbing:

R26-28:   ch 2 (counts as first stitch), *front post hdc in the next stitch, back post hdc in the next. Repeat from * around, ending with a front post hdc in last stitch.  Join with slip stitch to top of starting chain 2. (80 st)

R29:  Ch 1, sc in each st around.  Join with first sc in row.  Fasten off and weave in ends. (80 st).

Worsted Weight Yarn Hat Variation:

This pattern is worked with hand dyed worsted weight yarn. However the hand dyed yarn is a bit thinner than some worsted weight yarn in big box stores.  If you’d like to adjust the pattern for a thicker weight worsted weight yarn, stop the increases after row 9 (stitch count is 72).  Then work the pattern from row 11 until work measures 6.5”

Once hat is 6.5” inches from the top or the desired length, then work rows 26-29 for the ribbing.
