Chunky Crochet Hat

There is so much I love about this chunky crochet hat.  In fact, I love it so much that I have it on my head RIGHT NOW typing this post.  Because I’m crazy that way I guess.  It is so warm and cozy.  And even better… it’s a super fast make.  And if you know me at all, a super fast make is one of my favorite things on the planet.

Purple is my favorite color so when I spotted this Caron Chunky Cupcake yarn with the delectable purple fur pom pom and it was named Grapesicle, well.. I was a goner.  I’m love crocheting with Caron Cake yarn.  It just feels good gliding through my hook.  And it’s so fun to watch the colors transition.  Whenever I’m at Michaels I always find a way to sneak over to the Caron Cake section just for a peek.

As you know, I try to give my patterns meaningful names.  Right away I knew this one would be Mrs Plum.  Immediately I was taken back in time, down memory lane… digging out the Clue game from my grandma’s toy closet (ok..really… it was a coat closet that just happened to have some toys stashed away in it.)  This is the same grandma, by the way, that taught me to crochet that I’ve written about here and here.

My sisters and I would get up early and after grandma would come in our room for whispered “girl talk”, we’d head out in the living room in our PJs and pull out the Clue game, bricks or Tinker Toys (there weren’t too many selections at Grandma’s).  Meanwhile, Grandma would make breakfast for each of us to order.  Better than any restaurant.  And to this day, breakfast is my most favorite meal of the day.

By now.. one of you is saying…. HEY… WAIT ONE MINUTE…  That’s all well and good, but MRS Plum is NOT a character from the clue game… It is PROFESSOR PLUM and you’re a little gender confused as well.  Sadly, this is all true. (THANK you GOOGLE for the reality check.)  But you know what?  I don’t care.  I’m not changing it.  That hat is Mrs Plum and that’s that.  So there you go.

So let’s review:  Super fast project.  Cute hat with a somewhat goofy name.  Less than $5 to make.  Sigh.  Heaven.  Let’s get started!

  1. You just rock that MRS. Plum hat!! CLUE is one of our family favorites as well. My parents became legal guardians to my uncle Michael who was mentally and physically disabled. He passed away last year at the age of 70! That in itself is a miracle. But he LOVED playing games with us! Any excuse! My son always wanted to be Miss Scarlet since she went first. To this day another uncle remains Col. Mustard! Those are precious memories you have and a lovely way to honor them! It is an adorable hat!!
    Hugs, ??

  2. Oh that takes me back. My grandma had a toy closet too. it was the lower cupboard right outside the bathroom. she had all kind of games in there. Dominoes, cards, crayons and coloring books, Lincoln logs that had been my dads when he he was a boy. ….
