Crochet Coasters are the absolute best! I feel like I always need more of them in my decor scheme. Is it just me or do they seem to get lost all the time? Maybe it’s just me… Anyway, if you’re anything like me, you’ll be needing some of these crochet coaster patterns to get you through until you find all the coasters you made last summer.

Let’s go over some basics before we dive into the patterns.

How to Crochet a Coaster

A crochet coaster is the perfect project for both beginner crocheters and the experienced crocheter. Most use basic shapes and can be made from scrap yarn from your yarn stash which makes it a perfect project for everyone. It is a quick one-evening project and the end result is something everyone can use.

Simple crochet coasters are usually basic shapes, often a round or square shape and use basic crochet skills such as single crochet, double crochet and treble crochet.  A round coaster is worked in crochet rounds, starting with the stitch for the pattern (such as a single crochet circle or double crochet circle).  The pattern might be worked in continuous rounds or joined rounds

A square coaster starts with a foundation chain and then is worked back and forth in rows.

What Do You Need To Crochet A Coaster

Your crochet project can’t get much easier because a coaster only requires yarn and a crochet hook! I love my crocheted coasters in cotton worsted weight yarn, but they are the perfect pattern for raiding your yarn stash for bits of yarn to repurpose into a great project to gift. Of course, you can never have too many crochet coasters for yourself either!

Best Yarns for Crochet Coasters

The best yarn for a crochet coaster is cotton yarn.  Of course many crocheters also use a combination of cotton yarn and another fiber, acrylic yarn, a cotton blend, or even wool.  I prefer to to cotton yarns for a coaster because cotton yarn is more absorbent and machine washable.

What Size to Make Your Crochet Coasters

Coaster size is personal preference, however I find a size between 3 to 5 inches work best.  It’s usually pretty easy to adjust sizing for crochet coasters.  If you’re making a square coaster, just add or subtract stitches in the first row.  If you’re making a round coaster, you can often easily add or subtract one of the final rows.

    1. A flat circle will curl up if you do not increase properly in each round. The general “formula” is to take whatever number of stitches you have in the center and then increase by that many stitches the next row. For instance, if you start with 6 sc in a magic ring. The next row will have 12 stitches and the 3rd row will have 18 stitches. If you are increasing the correct number of stitches and still have curling, you might need to take a look at your gauge and if you are crocheting consistently the same. If you start out looser and then tighten up your stitches, that will cause the coaster to curl too. Hope that helps.
