Are you ready to gobble up some crochet turkey hat goodness? These patterns are something to feast your eyes on while cooking away.

Five crochet turkey hats, one that looks like a fully cooked turkey, one that looks like an amigurumi turkey wearing a pilgrim hat, one is a dog wearing a 2D turkey hat, one is a baby hat with a baby onsie, and one pattern that includes three earflap hats with hearts in the pupils.

These crochet patterns would be so adorable for a fun family photoshoot, I can picture it now! If you’re trying to get the entire extended family involved, you may need to rope in a few crochet lover friends to help you out, just tell them you’ll help them with their holiday gifts… or you’ll bring the wine. Whatever works, right?

What Is a Crochet Turkey Hat?

A crochet turkey hat is a fun way to make a memorable Thanksgiving. In general, a turkey hat crochet pattern features a turkey face with a few colorful feathers at the top of the hat, or some variety of a full blown turkey featuring drumsticks, the beak and feathers.

Why Would You Make a Crochet Turkey Hat?

For fun, of course!  Whether you’re looking for something for baby’s first thanksgiving or you’re just looking for a Thanksgiving turkey hat to wear while celebrating turkey day, a crochet turkey pattern is way too fun to make!

Supplies Needed for Crochet Turkey Hat

A cute Turkey Crochet Hat requires just a few simple things to make:

Crochet Hooks

Every fun crochet project needs the perfect crochet hook. These are my absolute favorite crochet hooks I recommend to everyone! I also have an ultimate guide to Crochet Hooks post if you want to dive in deep on this essential crochet tool.

Yarn Colors

Picking out yarn for a crochet project can be so, so fun. Traditionally the turkey part of these hats will be in brown yarn, but you can likely raid your scrap yarn for white and bright, fall colors for the feathers and embellishments for your turkey hat

Other Items:

Scissors and a yarn needle for weaving in the yarn tail at the end are a must for every project.   For some of these patterns, it may also be helpful to have a stitch marker or two lying around. While some of these are flat turkeys, a few of the patterns are more of crochet amigurumi turkey hats, so it can be very helpful to have a stitch marker to help keep track of rows.

Basic Stitches To Know

Most of these patterns use a variety of basic crochet stitches, so make sure that you know how to work a single crochet stitch, double crochet stitch, and slip stitch (sl st). Since these great patterns won’t take a long time to complete, your cute crochet turkey is just a few steps away!

Getting Started: Making a Crochet Turkey Hat Pattern

After you’ve gathered your turkey hat making supplies, there’s just one more thing to consider:  the pattern itself.

Choosing the Right Size Pattern for Your Needs

There’s a few decisions to make in determining the right crochet turkey hat to make.  First is deciding if you want a whimsical, turkey face hat or if a full body drumstick vibe is more your style.  Keep in mind how the elements might affect your fun in crocheting and the joy in wearing your finished hat.

Stuffed drumsticks, for instance, are a fun look, but will you or the hat recipient mind the weight and bulkiness of this type of hat?  Or are you more into the fun, whimsical vibe of a turkey face hat.

Do you want to wear the hat to keep your head warm or is it for indoor use?  If you need to protect your head from cold winds, consider a hat that doesn’t have a lot of gaps between stitches.  If this doesn’t matter, then crochet whatever speaks to your heart!

Along those lines, consider the skill level required for the turkey hat.  Is it a beginner friendly pattern?  Or one that require you to know advanced stitches and techniques?

Finally, consider the size.  Often times crochet turkey hats come in multiple sizes for the family.  This can be so fun if you want to crochet a matching hat for your entire family.

If you decide to make this pattern for your whole family (because let’s be honest, this would be such an adorable photo prop), it would be so cute to change the color of feathers for each person. Maybe blue yarn feathers for your cousin, green yarn feathers for your fun aunt who’s super outdoorsy, or orange yarn feathers for your sister that lives at the beach. Well, you get the idea.

Remember, if you fall in love with a turkey hat, but the size is not appropriate for you, you could always use the appliqué embellishments on another hat pattern.  For instance, my Salt of the Earth Beanie is perfect for a very easy, but warm, basic beanie.
