Grab some scrap yarn in your favorite Christmas colors and get ready to crochet this bit of holiday wall decor in one evening!

It’s a week before Christmas and this is my current situation: A snowy Michigan day, my Winston pup at his post and my cute Santa Wallhanging on the door.

Dog by door with Crochet Santa Wallhanging

I mean if we’re going to get technical here.. Winston pup isn’t really a puppy anymore. He’s all grown up! Can you believe it?! Not quite the little guy he was almost 5 years ago.

Irish Doodle Puppy

He’s the perfect dog for our stage in life: He loves to sleep in. He’s a cuddle bug. And he barks at any perceived threat to our home… you know.. things like snow, the Amazon truck, squirrels. All the things.

And on my march down memory lane, I’d be remiss not to talk about the origins of this darling Santa Wallhanging.

This is one of my earliest crochet designs. A twist on a Santa wallhanging my grandmother designed many years ago. I’ve since designed a whole series of crochet wall hangings and have been gradually moving my premium patterns from my pattern shops to the blog so that everyone can crochet them for free.

My wallhangings have 3 key components: Crochet Rings, a strap that gets woven in between the rings to hold them together and then 3 appliqués which are sewn on top.

Two crochet orange rings

The rings themselves are worked around silicone canning jar gasket rings. In my grandmother’s Santa wallhanging, she used the old style rubber canning jar gaskets. Unfortunately the rubber did not hold up to the test of time and there’s nothing sadder than seeing your grandmother’s work fall apart like that!

The easiest place to find the silicone canning jar gaskets is on Amazon although I purchased mine locally. My local store no longer carries them, but you might find some in a store that has a good canning section.

Look for wide-mouth rings for a mason jar. Typically gaskets come in ‘regular’ which is smaller and ‘wide-mouth’ which is larger. Go for the wide mouth gaskets for this project! The ring measures 3.5 inches across from edge to edge. You might need to go with this measurement since I’ve found that Amazon isn’t always labeling them correctly.

If your gaskets have the little tab on them, like mine do, use a pair of scissors to snip them off so you have a continuous ring to crochet around.

Grab some medium weight #4 yarn in holiday colors and your crochet hook, and let’s crochet this fun free pattern – The Crochet Santa Wallhanging!

Materials

*Sample used wide mouth size canning jar gaskets made of silicone.  They can be purchased on Amazon or you might find them locally, as I did.  Be sure to select the correct size: these are WIDE mouth canning jar gaskets designed to fit on standard sized mason jars with a wide opening (NOT regular). The outside dimensions of the jar ring are 3.5″ across by 3.5″ high.

Gauge:

Gauge is not important in this pattern.

Finished Crochet Turkey Wallhanging Size

Wall hanging is approximately 25” from top of loop to bottom of tassel. The Santa applique measures 4 ¼” across the widest point of the beard.

If there are tabs on the jar gaskets, cut them off with a pair of scissors so that the ring is truly a ring.

Red, green and white crochet rings

Crocheted Rings (Make 7)

Sample has 4 green rings and 3 red rings.

R1:  With Main Color, make 60 dc into and around the jar ring.  Join with sl st to 1st dc.  Fasten off.

R2:  Attach Gold to any dc and sc around.   Fasten off and weave in ends.

Here are some clear photos of the rings and strap used in the Turkey Wallhanging for reference in making the Santa Wall Hanging components.

Hanging Strip

With white, ch 90.

R1:  Sc in 10th chain and across to last chain.  Slip stitch in last chain.  Fasten off White.

R2:  Rotate work. Working in opposite side of chain, attach red with sl st to 1st chain (which is the opposite side of the last stitch worked in round 1).  Sc across until st before loop begins.  Start a sc with red, but do not pull the red yarn through last 2 loops.  Instead, pull a loop of white yarn through.  Using white yarn now, make 10 sc in loop, changing to green yarn in a similar manner in the 10th sc.

R3:  Working in the white sc of R1 and continuing with green, sc across and end with a slip stitch in the last chain.

Fasten off yarn and work in all loose ends.  Take several strands of white yarn (approx 10” long), fold in half and attach as a tassel at the bottom with a giant sl st.  The smooth end of the sl st should be on the right side of work.  Trim tassel to an eye pleasing length.

Crochet Santa Applique

With peach (or pink) yarn, chain 5 and join to form ring.

R1:  Ch 4 (counts as 1 tr), 23 tr in ring.  Join with sl st to 1st tr.  Fasten off peach yarn.

R2:  With white, join to a tr with a sl st.  *Sc in next 2 sc, 2 sc in next sc.  Repeat from * 3 times.  Make 17 large dc, working OVER the previous row’s tc into the ring.  Be sure to not pull too tight.  Join with sl st to 1st sc.

R3:  Turn work, (working 2nd row of Santa’s beard).  Sc in joining, ch 1, *sc in next sc, ch 1 around to last dc of beard.  End with a sc in last dc.

R4: Turn work, ch 1, sc in ch 1 space, *ch 2, sc in ch-1 sp.  Repeat from * around.  At end of beard, ch 2 and slip st to sc in row 3 below.

For hat, flip over work, working on wrong side of work:

R5:  Attach red yarn at the sc where beard starts.  Sc to other side of head.  Ch 1.

R6:  Turn and sc across.  Finish off, leaving a long strand of yarn.  Use yarn to sew jingle bell on hat.  Sew button eyes on the face, referring to the photos.

Finishing

Refer to picture and weave hanging strip over and under rings.  Tack down with yarn at the top and bottom of the strip and anywhere else as needed to hold in place.  Arrange the Santa motifs along the strip and sew down.
