Crochet pillow patterns are also a great way to learn new techniques and stitches and in many cases, you can make them as removable covers which is so great for changing the look for the seasons.

You might be wondering if crochet pillows are a good beginner project. I really love crochet pillows for this reason. You get enough practice to really master a crochet stitch or technique without the project being so big and overwhelming.

How Do You Crochet A Pillow?

Crocheting a beautiful crochet cushion is fun and easy. Most crochet pillows use basic crochet stitches. So make sure that you know how to work a single crochet stitch, double crochet stitch, treble crochet stitches and the slip stitch (sl st). Since these great patterns won’t take a long time to complete, your cute crochet pillow is just a few steps away!

Supplies for Making Crochet Pillows

You’ll need a few basic materials to make a great crochet pillow:

  1. Pillow Forms: Most crochet pillow patterns feature a pillow form. A pillow form is a basic pillow with a white or neutral cover. The crochet pillow fits over this form for a beautiful crochet cushion. Pillow forms can be purchased at craft stores like Joann or at home design stores. My favorite are down pillows from Calico. If you like a full and firm throw pillow, a designer secret is to put a larger size pillow form into a smaller sized pillow case. For example use a 20″ pillow inside an 18″ cover. Or stick to a same-sized pillow for a squishy feel.
  2. Yarn: Just about any yarn weight or fiber can work for a crochet pillow. Follow the pattern suggestions for best results. Many of these patterns are for worsted or bulky yarn weights.
  3. Crochet Hook: Choose your crochet hook size according to the pattern you select and the yarn you choose.

Crochet Pillow Variations

Many crochet pillow patterns are easily adjustable to other yarn weights or even different stitch patterns. Finished size is super important when crocheting a pillow. Since you are using a pillow form, the pillow case needs to fit appropriately.

If you decide to try a different crochet stitch or different yarn weight, be sure to pay attention to your crochet gauge and take measurements as you go so that the finished size of your crochet pillow is correct. For best results, use the yarn and hook size recommended by the designer and take the time to measure as you go to get the perfect fit.
