Crochet Flag Basket – Waves of Glory

Hot sunny days. A cold drink. Flip Flops. There’s something about a warm summer day and this Waves of Glory Crochet Flag Basket that just makes me happy.
In my corner of the world, the 4th of July falls just a week or so after the longest day of the year. In fact, as I’m typing this.. it IS the longest day of the year. A day when the sun is already rising as I let my dogs out at 5:30 am and the last little glimmer of daylight fades away around 10:00 pm.
I love that most of all. And during the long, cold Michigan winters, I look forward to this day. I tick off the little minutes of extra daylight each day that add up over the months until this gloriously long day of sunshine that seeps into my skin and warms me down to my soul. Sigh.
To me this crochet flag basket is everything I love about this long, lovely summer day. It’s hopeful. It’s patriotic. It sings of long summer days ahead. And it flat out.. just makes me happy. I hope it makes you happy too.

Waves of Glory Crochet Flag Basket
Here is what you will need:
- US J10/6 mm crochet hook (here are my favorite crochet hooks)
- Super Bulky weight yarn. Sample used Bernat Beyond: 3 oz Navy; 2 oz Red and 2 oz White
- Tapestry needle and scissors

Basket is 5.5” tall and 7.25” across.
Make a magic ring
With blue yarn, make a magic ring
R1: 10 hdc sc into ring (10 sts). Work in rounds
R2: *2sc in ea st*, repeat * to * around (20 st)
R3: *sc in next st, 2sc in next, repeat * to * around (30 st)
R4: *sc in next 2 st, 2sc in next, repeat * to * around (40 st)
R5: *sc in next 3 st, 2sc in next, repeat * to * around (50 st)
R6: *sc in next 4 st, 2sc in next, repeat * to * around (60 st)
R7: *sc in next 5 st, 2sc in next, repeat * to * around. Sl st to next st (70 st)
R8: Ch 1 and sc in same stitch (counts as 1stsc), hdc in next st, dc in next 3 st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next 3 st, *sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next 3 st, hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next 3 st. Repeat from * around. Join to top of 1stsc. (70 st)
R9: ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 2 st, 3dc in next st, dc in next 3 st, (dc next 3 st tog), *dc in next 3 st, 3dc in next st, dc in next 3 st (dc next 3 st tog), repeat from * around. Join to top of starting ch 3. (70 st)
R10: sl st in next stitch (important note: this slip stitch shifts the start of this row and subsequent rows)THEN, ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 2 st, 3dc in next st, dc in next 3 st, (dc next 3 st tog), *dc in next 3 st, 3dc in next st, dc in next 3 st (dc next 3 st tog), repeat from * around. Join to top of starting ch 3. (70 st) At end of row 10, change to white yarn. (70 st)
R11-13: Using white, repeat row 10. At the end of row 13, change to red yarn. (70 st)
R14-15: Using red, repeat row 10. (70 st)
R16: Sl st in next st, ch 2 (hdc in same st), sc in next st, sl st in next 3 st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next 3 st, *hdc in next st, sc in next st, sl st in next 3 st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next 3 st. Repeat from * around. Join to top of 1sthdc in row. (70 st)
R17: ch 1 and work reverse single crochet (crab stitch) around. Join with first st and fasten off. Weave in ends.

Hello Cheryl, thank you for sharing all your lovely patterns. I appreciate the messages you add to my inbox. You are amazing! I would like to try to make the Crochet Flag Basket in Red White and Blue. I was wondering if you could adjust the beginning to a chain and slip stitch for me instead of the magic circle? I would greatly appreciate it for me if you could? Thanks in advance.

I would suggest starting with a chain 4 and joining with a slip stitch to form a ring. If that turns out too tight for you, try a chain 5 instead.Then just chain up and work the hdc into the ring instead. Hope that helps!
