Puppy Crochet Baby Lovey

Meet Piper, quite possibly the cutest puppy you’ll have on your hook. This adorable crochet baby lovey is as much fun to make as it is to give.

I don’t even know what I love most. That adorable eye patch. The sweet little ears. Or that cutie pie mouth!

This sweet baby lovey has resided in my pattern shops as a premium pattern for the past few years but I decided Piper might find a better home here on the blog!

At first glance, the blanket portion of this lovey might look pretty similar to the Bunny Crochet Lovey Blanket. However, the blanket portion of this lovey is worked all in double crochet stitches. I used a lovely variegated yarn, but the pattern suits itself to almost any combination of solids or variegated yarns.

The head, arms, ears, eye patch and nose have a scrappy vibe so this would be a perfect project for your scrap yarn stash. Find a variegated yarn you like and then a few smaller balls of coordinating solids and PRESTO! An instant baby gift out of seemingly nothing.

Is there anyone else who totally loves that part of crocheting? This gifting with your time and yarn stash instead of outlaying of cash? There’s just something extra special about a gift you made yourself!

This project is a good introduction to amigurumi without feeling too overwhelmed by assembly and a lot of small pieces. The blanket is a bit more ‘standard’ crochet so it’s a nice mix of skills.

I really enjoy making a lovey blanket for babies. They are part security blanket, part baby crochet toy / stuffed animal. A little animal blanket is faster to make than a full size baby blanket and can be a great project for beginners to practice amigurumi techniques.

I also love that in a nursery of stuffed animals, a dog baby lovey blanket stands out and is great for toddlers too. I mean really.. what is cuter than a little one toddling around toting a security blanket!

A few hours and some scrap yarn and your Piper lovey comes to life!

More Lovey Patterns

Let’s finish up our Piper, our cute animal lovey…

Crochet baby lovey puppy in green, pink and blue

Special Note if Using Color Wave Yarn: The Color Wave yarn has long sections of solid (or close to solid) colors.  For the head, ears, eye patch and arms, I worked from the portions of the skein to make the piece appear as a solid color.  You may wish to do this, or simply allow the color changes to naturally occur.

Position patch on an angle over rows 6-11 on the left side of face.

Using scraps of black yarn or embroidery floss, work French knots for eyes, being sure to work left eye over the eye patch.

  1. Rows 10 and 11 for the blanket portion have the same instructions but different stitch counts – which would be impossible. Row 11 does not follow the increase pattern!

    1. The pattern is correct. In row 10 you are working (dc, ch 2, dc) in the chain 2 space, but in row 11 you are working (2dc, ch 2, 2 dc); so that’s where the increases come into play in that row. Hope that helps!
