What is the Mosaic Crochet Technique?

Mosaic crochet is a fun color technique for creating intricate patterns without having to change color in the middle of a row. The technique uses single crochet and double crochet stitches, with one color worked each row.

The most popular type of mosaic crochet is the overlay method. In overlay crochet, the design is worked from the right side only, from right to left (for right handed crocheters). The mosaic pattern is created by working all single crochet stitches in the back loop only and all double crochet stitches into the front loops of the row below. The double crochet stitches cover up the stitches, allowing the different colors and complex patterns to emerge.

It might sound complicated, but it is easy to learn. And because you don’t have to fully switch yarns when you want to change colors, it allows you to crochet much faster!
