A heart granny square is a sweet twist on the classic granny we all know and love. With just a few simple color changes, this easy pattern transforms a traditional square into something extra special — perfect for crocheters of any skill level.

I love how a simple stitch pattern can turn into something so meaningful. This little heart square feels extra special — perfect for baby blankets, Valentine’s projects, or anytime you want to tuck a bit of love into your life.
There’s something so timeless about a granny square. It’s one of those stitch patterns that never really goes out of style. My very first project as pre-teen new crocheter was a really large granny square blanket and to this day I delight on all the variations on the basic granny square pattern.
It’s like coming home to a pattern I know and love so much. And this heart granny square is such a sweet little update to the classic.
If you already know how to crochet a basic granny square, you’re more than halfway there. That same simple rhythm of double crochet clusters and chain spaces creates the foundation — we’re just adding a few easy color changes to “draw” the heart right into the center.

Just like the original, these squares are wonderfully versatile. Join a bunch together for a cozy blanket, stitch up a pillow, make a Valentine’s garland, or tuck a few into a baby blanket or gift. One little square can turn into just about anything.
The construction is the same classic combination of chain stitches and double crochet clusters worked into the spaces between stitches, which keeps things simple and beginner-friendly. Most of the square works up in that easy, familiar granny rhythm, with just a few rows that need a little extra attention to bring the heart to life.
It’s amazing how a small tweak to a traditional stitch can create something that feels completely new — and this heart version might just become your next favorite go-to square.
