I love fall in Michigan. The crisp air against my skin. The explosion of autumn red, orange and yellow. Watching the leaves fall in their slow, sweet dance to the ground.

And the smells. Oh… the smells. They get me every time. Cinnamon. Pumpkin. Burning leaves. All the things.

But what I love most of all is visiting a cider mill in the fall.

The best cider mill trips are a bit of an adventure. A 30-minute car ride where the anticipation builds with every mile. Then you pull in and there it is—the crowded market, excited children, pumpkins piled high and everyone bundled up in fleece and gloves against the chill.

And then you smell it.

Apples. Fresh apple cider. Hot sugared donuts. Oh my goodness.

Sometimes we head out into the fields to pick our own pumpkins. We wander through rows of apple trees, filling bags and wagons with sweet, juicy apples. And other times we skip the picking altogether and happily shop from all the beautiful things already gathered at the market.

It’s a fall tradition here, and I love every bit of it. The family time. The laughter. The crisp air. And especially those warm, melt-in-your-mouth sugared donuts chased down with icy cold cider.

It’s simply the best.

And the Cider Mill Apple Crochet Coasters are a celebration of all of that fall goodness.

There are a few different versions to make. You can crochet a classic solid apple in red or green, or make the sliced apple variation with its creamy center and tiny brown stitches for seeds. I love how such a small change gives the coaster a completely different look!

4 crochet apple coasters in red, green and cream yarn

This apple coaster is a sweet cousin to my Great Harvest Pumpkin Coasters. You’ll recognize that same charming overall shape, but from there, the apple gets a personality all its own.

The stem is a little longer, and I designed a brand-new leaf for the top that I absolutely love. Put it all together and you have a fun little apple that feels right at home in a cozy fall kitchen—or underneath your favorite mug of hot cider.

So grab some yarn, settle into your favorite crochet spot, and let’s make a little bit of cider mill magic!

Are These Crochet Apple Coasters Beginner Friendly?

If you’re comfortable with basic crochet stitches, these crochet apple coasters are a fun and approachable project.

You’ll need to know a few basic crochet techniques, including:

  • working in joined rounds
  • double crochet
  • half double crochet
  • single crochet
  • slip stitch
  • changing colors
  • a tiny bit of sewing and embroidery for the optional seeds

You’ll start each coaster with a magic ring and work the first few rounds in double crochet. The final round is where the magic happens! A combination of stitches transforms that simple circle into that sweet apple shape.

The stem is joined and worked continuously from the apple. Then the leaf is worked separately and sewn into place at the end. If you’re making the sliced apple variation, you’ll also add a few simple embroidered stitches for the seeds.

Why You’ll Love These Crochet Apple Coasters

These are the kind of little crochet projects I love.

They’re quick. They’re cute. And they don’t require a lot of yarn—which makes them perfect for using up some of those smaller amounts of worsted weight cotton hiding in your stash. They’re the perfect ‘watch TV in the evening and crochet’ kind of project.

I especially love that you can change the entire look with just a few color choices. Make a classic red apple, a pretty green apple, or switch things up with the sliced apple variation with its creamy center and tiny brown seeds.

And can we talk about that leaf?

I designed a brand-new leaf for these coasters, and I just love how it looks alongside the longer brown stem. Those little details give the apple its personality and make it look completely different from my Great Harvest Pumpkin Coasters, even though the two designs share a similar overall shape.

Make a set in one color or mix and match all the variations for your own little crochet apple harvest!

Crochet Apple Coaster Pattern Essentials

These crochet apple coasters start with a magic ring and are worked in joined rounds. The first three rounds are simple rounds of double crochet with increases to create a flat circle.

Then comes Round 4—and that’s where your apple really starts to take shape.

You’ll use a combination of slip stitches, half double crochet and double crochet to create the gentle curves at the top and bottom that turn your circle into an apple. At the end of the round, you’ll change to brown yarn and crochet the stem right onto the coaster.

The leaf is worked separately with green yarn. You’ll work different sized stitches along one side of the starting chain, rotate your work and then crochet along the opposite side to create the leaf shape. Once it’s finished, simply sew it into place near the stem.

Want to make the sliced apple variation? It’s an easy change. Work the first three rounds in cream yarn, then switch to your apple color for the final shaping round. A few little stitches of brown yarn create the seeds in the center.

Before you know it, you’ll have a whole stack of apples ready for your fall table—or maybe a mug of hot apple cider!

What Yarn is Best for a Crochet Apple Coasters?

I designed my Cider Mill Apple Coasters using worsted weight 100% cotton yarn. Cotton is one of my favorite choices for crochet coasters because it’s absorbent, durable and holds its shape beautifully. It’s also pretty easy and inexpensive to purchase locally making this a great ‘I want to make it now’ project!

For the solid apples, I used Crafter’s Secret cotton in Red and Vintage Green. Each coaster only takes about 16 yards of yarn, plus a couple of yards for the stem and leaf, so this is also a great project for using up leftover bits of cotton yarn from your stash.

For the sliced apple variation, I used Dishie in Swan for the creamy center, then switched to the apple color for the outside edge. A few scraps of brown and green are all you need to finish the seeds, stem and leaf.

And don’t feel like you have to stick with traditional apple colors! Dig through your cotton yarn stash and have some fun. Deep burgundy, golden yellow or even a pretty pink could make a gorgeous little apple. Mix and match your favorites and crochet yourself an entire apple harvest!

How to Crochet the Apple Coaster

This crochet apple coaster starts with a magic ring and a few simple rounds before the final round creates that classic apple shape. From there, you’ll add the stem and leaf—and a few tiny embroidered seeds if you’re making the sliced apple variation. Let’s get started!

Apple Coaster

With apple color yarn, make a magic ring.

R1:  Ch 3 (counts as first double crochet here and throughout), work 11 dc into ring, join with slip stitch to top of starting chain.  (12 sts).

R2:  Ch 3, dc in same stitch, 2 dc in each st around, join with slip stitch to top of starting chain.  (24 st)

R3: Ch 3, 2dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next.  Repeat from * around, join with slip stitch to top of starting chain.  (36 st)

R4: ch 1, *sl st in each of the next 2 st, (hdc and dc) in the next st, [dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next] four times, dc in next 2 st, (dc and hdc) in next st, Repeat from * once, sl st to 1st sl st in row, changing to brown.

Apple Stem

Continuing with brown, ch 8, hdc in 3rd ch from hook, hdc in next 5 ch, sl st to 2nd sl st from row 4.  Fasten off yarn and weave in ends.

Leaf

With green yarn, ch 7

R1:  hdc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in next 2 ch, hdc in next ch, sc in next ch, sl st in last ch.  Rotate work to work stitches on the opposite side of chain as follows: sl st in same st, sc in next st, hdc in next st, dc in next 2 st, (hdc and sl st) in last st.  Join with an invisible join to first hdc in round.

Fasten off green yarn and sew leaf to coaster.

Sliced Apple Variation

Work R1-3 of apple coaster in cream yarn.  Then switch to apple color yarn for R4 and follow the directions for the remainder of the apple coaster.  Use scraps of brown yarn to embroider seeds on the coaster.

Make It Your Own

One of the fun things about these crochet apple coasters is how many different looks you can create with a simple change of color.

Try:

  • Classic red and green apples for a traditional fall look
  • A mix of solid and sliced apples for a fun coordinating set
  • Deep burgundy or golden yellow for beautiful autumn apples
  • Soft pink for a pretty Pink Lady-inspired apple
  • Several shades of red and green for your own little apple orchard
  • Coordinating colors to match your kitchen or fall decor

You could make a matching set or mix up the colors and styles so every coaster is a little different. With such small amounts of yarn needed, it’s also a great excuse to dig through your cotton scraps and see what inspires you!

Final Thoughts on these Darling Apple Coasters

I had so much fun designing these Cider Mill Apple Coasters. From that plump little apple shape to the stem and leaf—and those tiny seeds on the sliced version—they have all the little details that make a simple project feel extra special.

I especially love how a stack of finished coasters looks like a tiny apple harvest. And somehow they bring me right back to those Michigan cider mill days filled with crisp air, fresh apples, warm donuts and cold cider.

Whether you make a matching set, mix up all the colors, or tuck a few into a fall gift, I hope you enjoy every stitch.

And don’t be surprised if one apple turns into two… and two turns into an entire bushel!
