I love a fun multi purpose crochet hat pattern and this Spirited Stripes Beanie is it.
Whether you’re looking for a movie themed hat for the holidays or a hat to rock favorite sports team, this hat is so much fun to crochet!
I’m a fan of a hint of a holiday. Like I don’t want to full on get dressed up for Halloween, but I like the vibe of wearing a little something that makes me smile and feels a little festive too.
It’s why I love my Candy Corn Hat, for instance. This year I’ve been a little Beetlejuice inspired. I have fond memories of the 1988 original movie and I’ve been thinking a movie night might be in order to watch the 2024 sequel.
And a crochet Beetlejuice Hat might just be the thing.
Only I also love a hat pattern that’s versatile and this Spirited Stripes Beanie is all that. Change up the stripe portion to red and white and suddenly it becomes a Grinch inspired hat.
Use 2 colors of your favorite sports team and it’s a crochet team spirit hat. And let’s not forget.. just using your own favorite 2 colors makes this hat a complete classic.
I love that kind of pattern. One that I can use in so many ways!
The Spirited Stripes Beanie is based on the oh so popular Salt of the Earth Beanie with a few differences.
First up, we are joining our rounds. In this version, every row starts with a chain 2 and is joined at the end. In the stripe portion, do NOT count the chain 2 as a stitch and join to the top of the 1st actual hdc. This is a bit different than I normally like to work joined rounds, but our Michigan Fall and Winter season can be cold and this keeps things a bit warmer.
When it comes time to work the ribbed brim, however, we switch back to counting the starting chains as a stitch. I’ve made good notes in the pattern so you’ll know just what to do.
You also might notice that I’m breaking with tradition and not giving you the exact brand of worsted weight yarn I used. I used Vanna’s Choice by Lion Brand throughout. However, the Radiant Lime color has been discontinued. It was in my stash and I wanted to use it up. Hobby Lobby’s I Love This Yarn brand has a Keylime color that would also work well as a substitute.
After I made the beanie, I realized that a green pom pom would be perfect. And, of course, that’s not the easiest thing to come by locally at the last minute! I ended up picking up some green fur at Joann and following my post on how to make a fur pom pom.
As you can tell, it’s not a perfect match. So if you decide to go this route, take the time to pick out a pom pom and yarn that coordinate a bit better. Etsy has some lovely options and if you happen to find a removable pom pom that green can do double duty on a Halloween or a Christmas hat.
The Spirited Stripes Beanie uses a Magic Ring to get started. Then it’s some easy half double crochet rounds for the body of the hat. We finish up with a post stitch ribbing and a final round of single crochet to finish it all up!
Any way you go, this is a fun and fast hat you’ll love making!

Finished Hat Size
Fits an average size adult head. The hat is 20” around and 8.5” long.
Project Notes
The striped portion of the hat is worked in joined rounds. The chain 2 at the start of each round does NOT count as a stitch. When joining the round, join to the 1st hdc (and not the chain). This creates a warmer hat with fewer gaps between stitches.
