Be still my little crochet heart because this sweet, spring Gingham Crochet Wine Cozy has me smitten.crochet purple gingham wine cozy with large purple flower

Sigh. I can’t even.  This sweet crochet wine cozy has my heart singing the praises of spring!  That bright juicy flower?  And that delightful gingham crochet plaid?  Delicious!

A wine cozy is the perfect crochet project. Fast and fun. Scrap yarn or planned.  Great for a gift, because popping a wine bottle into a beauty like this is a classy, fun gift to give.  But there’s also something to be said for making one for yourself.  To enjoy.  Mine is currently residing in my dining room and I have to tell you?  It makes me smile every time I look at it!

Are you wondering what the difference is between gingham, plaid and buffalo plaid?  And maybe you’re thinking (and you’d be right) that this Gingham Crochet Wine Cozy has a lot in common with the Buffalo Plaid Wine Cozy?

Gingham consists of white and one other color.. in this case, white and dark purple.  In fabric, where the 2 colors intersect, the colors blend, hence the light purple.  So to relocate this effect, simply use a white yarn and then 2 shades of the same contrast color–in our case purple and a lighter purple.

Plaid, according to the Buffalo Jackson Trading Co is less orderly and the criss crossing striping can have varying widths.  Buffalo plaid (also known as buffalo check) is similar to Gingham.  It has even squares using 2 colors: Red and Black.  However the interesting colors form a burgundy.

Put another way, Gingham and Buffalo Check (Buffalo Plaid) are TYPES of plaid.

But maybe you don’t even want to think about this because crocheting and enjoying the gorgeous fruits of our labors don’t warrant that kind of deep thought.  You are going to just love the Gingham Crochet Wine Cozy.

I think you’ll really enjoy this crochet pattern. Start by picking out 2 shades of a contrast color you just love.  Blues, Pinks, Purples, Greens all look lovely as Gingham Crochet projects.  Then pick a white yarn.  The wine cozy itself uses 2 strands of yarn held together at the same time.  I find it easiest to just roll yarn off the skein before I start into a separate ball.  (Or use this yarn winder which I completely love.)  Then you simply hold 2 strands of yarn, using it as though it was one.

After the crochet wine bottle cozy is done and ends are woven in, it’s time to move onto the big flower. I’m kinda in love this beauty too.. so much fun to crochet.  I finished it off with a crocheted little circle for the center, but you could use a button instead if you’d like.

When crocheting gingham or plaid, you might notice that the color changes slant ever so slightly in one direction.  This is a perfectly normal phenomenon that happens when you work in one direction round and round.  If you are right handed, the work will slant to the right.  If you are left handed, it will slant to the left.  In the case of this gingham crochet wine cozy, when it’s placed on the bottle, a simple re-adjustment gets the lines nice and straight!
