Crochet Basket Tote

There’s something about a crochet basket that gets me every time. Useful. Beautiful. Equally fun to make and use.
I love that this is a double duty basket. It looks great displayed in your house with some lightweight books or other fun things inside. But, those handles are also useful so it also doubles as a fun little tote.
Maybe I have a little too many crochet projects half finished, but I’m always in the market for a fun bit of something to stash a crochet project. And this little number fits the bill nicely. Isn’t she just beautiful?
I’ve had this Caron Tea Cake in my stash for awhile and I’ve been dying to make something with that sweet purple colorway forever. Enter this crochet basket with handles.
Caron Tea Cakes are a #6 weight Super Bulky Yarn. They seem to be a bit seasonal, so if you can’t find the exact yarn, check back later in the year. Or, just find an equally beautiful #6 weight yarn to use instead. This is a very fun pattern you’ll want to make again and again.
The pattern is worked in continuous rounds, so a stitch marker is helpful. The basket is a nice mix of a sturdy basket with some body. I love that because it means I can also use the basket handles and carry around balls of yarn, patterns, really anything I want. It would be great in a bathroom as a beautiful spa basket or even as gift baskets for someone special.
This fun crochet basket design may seem like a complicated-looking basket. But it is really easy and fast thanks to the super bulky weight yarn! You soon find yourself crocheting baskets for every room of your house!
In some ways, it reminds me of my wine cozies. Simple stitches (mostly just single crochet) and then the handles are two steps: one row with 2 chain and skip stitch sections. Then the next row, you work over those chain stitches to solidify the handles. Finish off the basket with one more row of single crochet and you’re done.
Perfection.

Here is what you will need for this crocheted basket pattern:
- US L 11/8.00 mm crochet hook (these are my absolute favorite hooks I recommend to everyone!)
- 9 oz Super Bulky (# 6) Yarn, Sample used Caron Tea Cakes in Winterberry
- Stitch Marker for keeping track of rows (optional, but helpful)
- Tapestry needle and scissors

Approximately 10” across and 9-1/2” tall
Crochet Basket Pattern
Make a magic ring
R1: 6 sc into ring (6 sts). (Do not join, worked in rounds throughout)
R2: 2 sc in ea st (12 st)
R3: *sc in next st, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around. (18 st)
R4: *sc in next 2 st, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around. (24 st)
R5: *sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around. (30 st)
R6: sc in next 2 st, 2sc in next, *sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around until 2 stitches remain, sc in next 2 st. (36 st)
R7: *sc in next 5 st, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around. (42 st)
R8: sc in next 3 st, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 6 st, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around until 3 stitches remain. Sc in next 3 st. (48 st)
R9: *sc in next 7 st, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around. (54 st)
R10: *sc in next 8 st, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around. (60 st)
R11: sc in next 4 st, 2 sc in next st, *sc in next 9 st, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around until 5 stitches remain. Sc in next 5 st. (66 st)
R12: *sc in next 10 st, 2 sc in next. Repeat from * around. (72 st)
The next rounds form the sides of the basket
R13: Work in the back loop this row ONLY: sl st in next st, sc in the back loop only around. (72 st)
R14-35: sc around (72 st)
The next rounds form the side handles
R36: sc in next 12 st, ch 12, skip 12 st, sc in next 24 st, ch 12, skip next 12 st, sc in last 12 st (72 st including chain stitches)
R37: sc in next 12 st, work 12 sc over the chain loop from prior row, sc in next 24 st, work 12 sc over chain loop, sc in last 12 st. (72 st)
R38: sc around. At end of round, slip stitch to next stich. (72 st)
Fasten off and weave in ends.

Do you think this would work with Bernat Blanket yarn since it is a #6 weight as well? I some leftover in my stash and storage is a good idea.
I think the gauge would work since they are both #6 weight yarns. My concern would be that the Bernat Blanket yarn might be a little bit more floppy. If it were I would probably try it and see what I thought of it as it went along.
I love this! Will definitely give it a try. I’m wondering how much yarn it takes? I looked twice to see if I missed it. Is one cake enough?
It is up there in the materials section. It takes 9 oz. One Tea Cake is 8.5 oz, so if you were willing to make it a bit shorter, it would likely work with one cake.
