Not Your Grandma’s Crochet Slippers

Easy crochet slippers don’t have to be boring! Enter this free crochet slipper pattern. They aren’t your grandma’s crochet slippers!
Everyone should have a grandma like my grandma. I have some of the best memories of her and just about every day that goes by, I think of her. Sometimes it’s some crazy thing she used to say. A lot of times I think of her when I crochet.
As a kid, I anticipated visits to my grandparents like some people look forward to vacation. We’d arrive after a four hour drive and my parents would be exhausted. But grandma would open the door even before our car doors closed and…boom..4 kids running in at full steam and getting the biggest hugs and smoochiest kisses. Her thick accent would warm our hearts and she’d say love words and smile.
There would be more hugs. Delicious smells would drift in from the kitchen. And the whole house just smelled like grandma’s house-you know-a smell you can’t quite describe, but if you closed your eyes and smelled that smell you would be taken right back there. It was delicious and it was good.
Not long after we arrived, grandma would slip to her bedroom and come out with a bag full of crochet wonderment that meant crochet gifts were coming! And if it was winter that usually meant crochet slippers.
My grandma had a habit of finding a crochet pattern she liked and then making a lot of them. Like really a lot. Hundreds even. She also had strong opinions on things that were hard to change. And so what that meant was that grandma found one slipper pattern that she just loved and then she made them for EVERYONE every year for like a decade (or two).
Unfortunately, that also meant that someone once tried on a slipper, found it a bit too short, and from then on, grandma crocheted everyone’s slipper to the new longer size. As a result, I always had crochet socks which were way too big for my feet and I had to be careful not to trip a little when I walked. But I never said a word because my grandma made them and I loved them just the same.
I thought it would be fun to design crochet slippers that are a little more up to date. I picked up this variegated yarn forever ago. And when the leaves started to turn and the air got a bit chilly, I thought about that yummy yarn and these delicious crochet slippers were born. I love rich colors and the little wood bead in the center of the flower just makes me smile.
This crochet slipper pattern is super quick to make. The crochet slipper will fit a size 8-9 women’s size. If you need the slipper smaller or larger, just adjust the number of rows or adjust your hook size up or down. It is an easy way to customize this free pattern for the best fit.

I picked a fun variegated yarn from my stash for my crocheted slippers, but you could go with a solid color yarn instead. Easy Crochet Slippers Pattern
Here is what you will need:
- US G 6/4.00 crochet hook (these are my absolute favorite hooks I recommend to everyone!)
- 2.5 oz Worsted Weight yarn (Sample used Red Heart Super Saver in Reef Color)
- Small amount of contrasting color for edging and flowers (I used scrap yarn)
- 2 Buttons (1/2″ to 3/4″ in size)
- Tapestry needle and scissors

Size: Crochet slipper will fit a size a US 8-9 women’s size but is easily adjusted for other foot sizes
Crochet Slipper (make 2):
R1: Make a magic ring and dc 12 . Join with slip stitch to 1st st. (12 st).
R2: Ch 3 (counts as dc here and throughout) dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 1st st. (16 st)
R3: Ch 3, 2dc in next st, *dc in next st, 2 dc in next. Repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 1st st. (24)
R4: Ch 3, dc in next st, 2 dc in next st, *dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next, repeat from * around. Join with sl st to 1st st. (32 st)
R5-8: Ch 3, dc in ea st (32) Join with sl st to first st after each round.
The next row establishes the body of the slipper and you will begin working back and forth as follows:
R9: Ch 3, dc in next 23 st (leave 8 stitches free). Turn.
R10-18: Ch 3, dc in ea st across row (24 st)
Note: Try on the slipper and add or subtract rows here as needed for length.
R19: Ch 3, dc in next 9 st, dc 2 tog, dc 2 tog, dc in last 10 (22 st). Fasten off yarn, leaving a strand for sewing.
Sew up heel.
Edging:
With contrasting yarn, crochet edging as follows:
R1: With the right side of the heel facing you, join contrast yarn to the right of the center. Sc 2 tog, sc 2 tog (this cinches in the heel a bit). You are working in the sides of the double crochet used to make the slipper. Work 2 sc in each stitch around. At the inside corners (by the toes), sc 3 together. join with a slip st to the 1st st in the row.
R2: Ch 1, sc around in ea stitch of the previous round. At the front corners, sc 2 together. Join with a slip stitch to the 1st stitch. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Flower:
The flower is made out of the same contrasting yarn, following the large size Crochet Flower pattern.
Sew buttons in the center of the flower. Then sew flowers on slippers and weave in any ends.

The print friendly feature takes seven pages to print out. Perhaps getting the pattern into a plain pattern format would help shorten it up; lose the 1st, 2nd and/or 3rd wording…..smaller pictures….etc. Thank you, too for a great looking pattern!

The patterns on the blog are formatted for online reading and accommodate laptops, tablets and phones. ‘Print Friendly’ is an app that reads the coding and “removes” the ads before printing. I am exploring some options for offering an ad-free PDF format of my patterns at a nominal cost in the future. Another option is to copy and paste the text you want to print into a word processing program and then print from there.
Oh, yesh……..I’m a copy and paste freak; LOL!! Oh, : US I9/5.50 mm crochet hook…..for the flower…..I’d make it read: I/9….the I9 looks like a size 19.
I started the pattern but have no idea what you mean by “sew the heel”. Help!
Easy peasy. Just fold the work in half and use a yarn needle and the yarn end to sew the 2 edges together. That forms the heel.
Love the Pattern. Going to start a pair. Thank you for this. My Grandmother used to make similiar slippers out of washcloths. She made several for everybody. Gave her something to do.
Do you suggest putting anything on the bottom of the slippers for tread? The pattern did not mention anything.

Carolyn, other tricks are, hot glue strips (pro probably already have it. Cons, can feel hard on tender feet.) Make stripes, circles or a fun design with puffy paint. (Pro softer that hot glue, can have fun with it. Cons 24 hour drying time may need to be reapplied with heavy use. Pro good rest to make several ?), ovals of suede, shelf liner (not the slick kind, but for kitchen shelves) or rough felt. Pros much softer on the feet, works better for non flat sole slippers, adds softness and stability especially for seniors and kids. Cons, you do have to sew them on and usually need and awl or leather needle punch) When I can’t get the non skid from the other company, I generally go for one of the last three options for quicky slippers or puffy paint for soled slippers.
Love this pattern. So easy. I got up to see the heal. I don’t understand the instructions for starting the edging. What do you mean by right side of heal facing you and join contact yarn to right of the center?
I’m glad you like the pattern so far! I’m not sure which part is confusing to you. The contrast yarn is blue, in this case. After you’ve sewn up the heel, hold the slipper so that the heel seem is facing you. As you are looking at the slipper seam, attach the yarn in the stitch to the right side of the joining seam. We decrease right away and that places the decrease at the heel so it tightens it up a bit for a better fit. Hope that helps.

Thank you for the very easy/simple, yet beautiful pattern. I am a seasoned crocheter, but sometimes simple is best. I’ll be making a pair for myself this evening while watching TV with my husband. Just in time for the coming chill in the air.
Making these for my ex mother-in-law going to visit her in the nursing home today I’m sure she’ll love them they are dark purple with a variegated flower and edging I think they turned out really nice

I love the pattern .Sorry to ask for help on a pattern that isn’t yours but I need your help. Its a turned heel .It states to go down two rows to pick up the stitch .Makes sense but still leaves gaps and it isn’t exactly conducive to slip stitch it calls for .The pattern is for tube rounds rather than in the round .What am I doing wrong? I have muddled through and made two pairs .I frogged it and tried both using the slip stich it called for as well as a single crochet both left too much bulk .Is it possible the pattern is wrong? If you are wondering its from a hard cover book I bought a while back.I started the project before I found your website.
It can be difficult to resolve a pattern problem in a pattern that’s in an in-print book. Your best bet is to try to reach the designer; you might be able to do a search to find the designer online. Or you can try contacting the publisher. Sometimes in-print books have errors and corrections will be on the publisher’s website. It might be easiest to pop over to our Crochet 365 Knit Too group on Facebook and posting a photo of the problem area. That way people can look at the crochet and help come up with solutions that will work for you!

Getting ready to make this… do you put anything on the bottom of the feet to make it non slip?
I do not, but I’ve heard of people using a puffy fabric paint on the soles that might work.
I don’t see any information regarding how many oz. of yarn it takes to knit a pair, only the oz. weight of the yarn. Could you tell me how many please.

I purchased your pattern , and it was too large for me. Do I adjust the stitches or go down a needle size?
You could do either, but I would start with dropping down in hook size first.
