How to crochet black eyed susan flowerI need this flower.  I need it’s bright cheer.  It’s decidedly different points.  It’s simple button.  I haven’t decided yet.  Will it go on a hat?  A headband?  A cup cozy? I’m not sure, but I know I love this crochet black eyed susan and I think you will too. If you’re like me, you like a fun, but simple crochet project now and then.  And this, my friends.. is it!  A little bit of yarn and 15 minutes or so and you’re done!  Let’s get started!

Crochet Black Eyed Susan

Here is what you will need:

  • Worsted weight yarn in yellow.  Sample used Lion Brand Wool-Ease in gold
  • US G6/4mm crochet hook or a size hook appropriate for your yarn
  • ½” Dark Brown Button
  • Tapestry needle and scissors

How to crochet black eyed susan flower

Special Stitch:

Popcorn with Picot:  The popcorn with picot stitch is made by working 5 dc into the same stitch, with an added small picot at the top of the middle dc.  Work into the same stitch as follows:  3 dc, ch 2, sl st to last dc worked, 2 dc.  There are now 5 dc in the same stitch.  Then, drop the stitch from your hook and insert your hook front to back into the top of the first dc made and pull loop through the top of the first dc to close the popcorn.

Size:
Approximately 3 inches wide

Ch 4, sl st to 1st ch to form ring

 

R1: ch 1 and work 8 sc in ring, sl st to 1st sc.

R2: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc) continue to work a Popcorn Picot stitch as follows into the same st as joining:  work 2 more dc, ch 2, sl st to last dc worked, 2 dc.  There are now 5 dc in the same stitch.  Then, drop the stitch from your hook and insert your hook front to back into the top of the starting ch 3 and pull loop through the top of the first dc to close the popcorn. Ch1, * popcorn picot stitch, ch 1 in next st. Continue from * around.  (8 popcorn picot stitches made).  Sl st to top of starting ch 3.  First round of petals made.

R3: *Work all in the next ch 1 space:  Sl st, ch 2, dc, tc, ch 2 and sl st to tc, dc, ch 2, sl st*, work * to * into each of the 8 spaces.  (second round of petals made)

Fasten off and weave in ends.  Sew button in center if desired.
